The city of Zaozhuang in Shandong province is one of China's seven major pomegranate producing regions. With a cultivation area of 120,000 mu (8,000 hectares) and over 6 million trees, the city's pomegranates have carved a niche in the national market. Yicheng district, the heart of Zaozhuang's pomegranate industry, boasts the country's largest contiguous planting area, different varieties, and a complete industrial chain.

Yicheng district has established its raw material base, developed a robust logistics and marketing network, and encouraged enterprises to develop high-end pomegranate products, including beverages, medicines, cosmetics, and healthcare supplements. Currently, over 30 Zaozhuang-based enterprises specialize in the deep processing and sale of pomegranate products, offering a range of more than 20 products.

Capitalizing on the aesthetic value of pomegranates, Zaozhuang has also ventured into the derivative industry, introducing pomegranate bonsai, a popular choice among consumers. The Yicheng pomegranate bonsai industry now employs over 3,500 people and produces around 200,000 bonsai pots annually.

Recognizing the significance of germplasm resources as the "chip" of the pomegranate industry, Zaozhuang has established China's only pomegranate germplasm repository. In recent years, the repository has expanded its collection, preserving a vast array of high-quality and wild pomegranate varieties from both domestic and international sources. Additionally, the city has actively promoted the development of superior varieties, enhancing the quantity and utilization rate of pomegranate germplasm resources. Currently, Zaozhuang houses 432 pomegranate germplasm accessions, more than any other city in China.

Leveraging its abundant resources, Zaozhuang has vigorously promoted rural vitalization, fully exploring the "treasures" embedded within its pomegranates. By fostering industry clusters, building a comprehensive industrial chain, and cultivating leading enterprises, Zaozhuang has allowed its people to enjoy lives as vibrant and prosperous as the pomegranate fruit itself.
