The Chinese government last year entrusted Shandong with the mission of building a pilot zone for green, low-carbon and high-quality development as part of efforts to achieve the nation's carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals.

Shandong province has launched measures to facilitate the gradual transition from dual control over the amount and intensity of energy consumption to dual control over the amount and intensity of carbon emissions.

Efforts have been made to promote the transition towards green and low-carbon production methods and lifestyles, and accelerate the advancement of modernization featuring harmony between humanity and nature.

Scientific and technological innovation plays a key role in promoting green, low-carbon and high-quality development. In this vein, Shandong has accelerated the construction of high-level innovation platforms. Presently, one national laboratory, 21 national key laboratories, and nine provincial laboratories and 277 provincial key laboratories are being built in the province.

Shandong is also phasing out the use of traditional energy sources while searching for sustainable alternatives.

With the goal of building a modern energy system, Shandong will accelerate the construction of five clean energy bases such as nuclear power and offshore wind power installations on the Jiaodong Peninsula, and efficiently promote the low-carbon energy transition.

In the first half of this year, the installed capacity of new energy and renewable energy in the province reached 83.82 million kilowatts, accounting for 41.8 percent of the total installed capacity.

Fiscal, taxation, financial, investment, and pricing policies and systems of standards will also be improved to support green development.
