The 2023 Green, Low-carbon and High-quality Development Conference kicked off on Aug 28 in the coastal city of Yantai, East China's Shandong province, which is promoting green and low-carbon development.

Yantai, known for its manufacturing industry, has been making efforts to transform itself into a demonstration area for green, low carbon and high-quality development in the province and in the nation as a whole.

These efforts include upgrading traditional industries, fostering emerging industries and formulating layouts for future industries with the aim of fully promoting the high-end, intelligent and green development of the manufacturing industry.

One example is the city's chemical industry, which is a traditional pillar industry in Yantai. Through transformation and upgrading, it is becoming a pillar industry and advantageous industry cultivated by the city. According to the city’s development plan, Yantai will become a world-class green petrochemical city, with its industrial output value expected to exceed 500 billion yuan ($68.76 billion) in 2026.

The key to the transformation of traditional industries lies in the technical upgrading, to which end Yantai has rolled out special measures and invested 20 billion yuan, targeting 100 typical projects as demonstration of transformation.

In addition to the transformation of traditional industries, the city is also actively cultivating emerging industries.

Take the clean energy sector for instance. Yantai is a provincial and national leader in the application of clean energy. The city's installed capacity of clean energy ranks first in the province, and is the first city in the country to commercialize nuclear energy heating. It has issued the province's first nuclear power, first offshore wind power and the world's first offshore floating photovoltaic power generation.

In addition, Yantai is also putting its eyes on future industries to build a modern, green and low carbon industrial system and achieve high-quality development by grasping opportunities brought by technical updates and industrial transformation.

The efforts include building intelligent factories with digital products, automatic production and smart equipment, encouraging green production and applying cloud computing technology in industrial production.
