In recent years, Rongcheng, a county-level city in Weihai, Shandong province, has been promoting the marine aquaculture economy. It has explored the ecological aquaculture model to protect the marine eco-environment and implemented the goal of sustainable marine development.

Rongcheng is a State-level demonstration area for ecological aquaculture. The city's marine ecological aquaculture area is more than 400,000 mu (about 266.67 square kilometers), with nearly 40 kinds of aquaculture species. It is an important marine species breeding base, which is also known as the "granary of the sea" throughout the Jiaodong Peninsula region.
