The Qingdao International Academician Park, an academic cluster in Licang district, Qingdao, has been boosting the development of an entire hydrogen industrial chain encompassing production, storage, transportation, and vehicle hydrogen energy.

Two projects launched by the park that focus on hydrogen and fuel cell technology have been selected as major demonstration pilot projects for the hydrogen energy industry in the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) of Shandong province.

The park has built its first scientific research demonstration project integrating hydrogen production and hydrogenation in Qingdao. It plans to build a hydrogen energy international research institute and a new energy science and technology industrial park.

"Qingdao is a famous manufacturing city with sufficient hydrogen as industrial by-product, allowing for industrial development," said Zhu Wei, General Manager of Hai Driver, a new energy technology company based in the park.

"There are many potential uses for hydrogen in Qingdao, including in port logistics, rail transit, and other industries, which have broad prospects for development," added Zhu.

New energy is listed as one of five emerging industries in Shandong expected to foster new economic drivers, while hydrogen energy is recognized as a new energy that is expected to be applied on a large scale.

The province plans to develop a competitive hydrogen industry, according to this year's Shandong government work report.
