Jinan sets ambitious goal for digital industry development

Jinan, East China's Shandong province is ramping up efforts to promote its digital economy and elevate it to a world-class level by 2030, officials announced at a news briefing on Oct 19.

Jinan will work with the Shandong provincial government to foster innovative enterprises and industrial clusters so that it can become a national leading technology center for computing power, arithmetic and algorithms.

According to development plan, the city is aiming to build a digital industrial cluster focusing on servers, supercomputing and quantum information, supported by software, artificial intelligence and blockchain, and oriented by digital application, by 2022.

The industrial scale of the digital sector is expected to exceed 530 billion yuan ($79.32 billion) in 2022, accounting for over 47 percent of Jinan's GDP.

By 2030, the digital industrial scale is expected to exceed 1 trillion yuan, and the digital economy will account for over 60 percent of Jinan's GDP, according to a provincial plan.

In 2019, the digital economy in Jinan accounted for about 39 percent of its GDP. Furthermore, more than half of the country's AI computing power came from Jinan, said Ji Peide, director of the municipal bureau of industry and information technology.
