Rizhao Museum was founded in 1986 and moved to its current site in September 1999. It is a comprehensive museum, facilitating research, exhibitions of cultural relics and patriotism education. It spans an area of 22 hectares, with a building area of 9,260 sq m. The museum’s modern building is a forms part of the cityscape.

The museum boasts an abundance of collections relating to cultural relics of the Dawenkou, Longshan, Yueshi, Shang and Zhou dynasties (c.16th century-256 BC). Also on display are stone, pottery and bronze wares, and coins from the Paleolithic era.

The museum has hosted more than 50 large-scale exhibitions, including a Longshan black pottery exhibition, a display on ancient instruments of torture and an exhibition on fighting against evil cults.

A number of unique displays, such as Longshan cultural exhibits and the Haiqu ancient tomb exhibition have also featured at the museum.

Rizhao city is the main site for Longshan culture in Shandong province; more than 100 Longshan sites have been found there. Displays of stoneware, jade, pottery, zoological specimens and building relics offer visitors to explore the development of primitive society, the emergence of feudal society and the rule of social development.

Haiqu ancient tomb of the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) is one of Rizhao Museum’s major exhibitions. The site of the tomb made the list of ‘Top 10 Chinese Archaeological Discoveries’ in 2002 for its well-preserved tomb structure, unique funeral customs and large number of cultural relics. More than 1,200 funerary objects, including pottery, bronze, jade and iron items were found in the tomb.
