Weifang sets bold vision for sustainable growth and innovation in 2025

In 2024, Weifang achieved remarkable economic growth, with its GDP surpassing 820.32 billion yuan ($113.2 billion), solidifying its position as the fourth-largest economy in Shandong province. The city's 5.9 percent year-on-year GDP growth reflects strong industrial expansion, rising consumer activity, and sustained investment momentum.

A key contributor to Weifang's success was its thriving agricultural sector, which generated a total of 135.87 billion yuan in output. The sector grew by 4.4 percent, ranking second in the province in terms of growth and further cementing Weifang's agricultural leadership.

Meanwhile, the city's industrial economy saw impressive growth, with industrial output from enterprises above designated size increasing by 8.5 percent, outpacing the provincial growth rate by 0.2 percentage points.

Weifang's foreign trade also made strong progress, with imports and exports valued at 358.27 billion yuan, an increase of 5.2 percent year on year. Meanwhile, the retail market thrived, with total social retail sales climbing 6.7 percent to 313.16 billion yuan. Fixed asset investment increased by 4.1 percent, surpassing both the national and provincial growth rates.

Looking toward 2025, Weifang is committed to maintain its high-quality economic growth by strengthening key industrial sectors such as power equipment, high-end chemicals, new-generation information technologies, food processing, and smart agricultural machinery. The city is also diversifying its economy by nurturing emerging industries like the low-altitude economy and photovoltaic modules, while advancing digital transformation and boosting its marine economy.

Central to these plans is a strong emphasis on technological innovation. In 2025, Weifang will continue prioritizing innovation-driven growth, strengthening high-tech enterprises, increasing R&D investment, and attracting top talent. The city also plans to build advanced research facilities and foster collaboration with leading universities.

With a target of 5.5 percent GDP growth and a 6.5 percent increase in industrial output in 2025, Weifang is on track to sustain its economic expansion. By emphasizing technological innovation, industrial upgrading, and emerging sectors, the city aims to make significant contributions to China's broader development goals and continue its modernization efforts.
