An exhibition showcasing the winning works of a couplet competition in Qingdao was held in Shinan district, Qingdao on Jan 9. It was part of a series of cultural activities to welcome the Spring Festival and the Year of Rat.

More than 100 original couplets were submitted to the competition. The works demonstrated people's love for the country and showcased Shinan's achievements in developing into a modern district. Twenty of the best works were ultimately selected to be put on display. 

During the exhibition, calligraphers from Shinan district's calligrapher association wrote the Chinese character fu, which means happiness and good luck, in a variety of fonts and sent them to participating residents.

Participants also got the chance to select their favorite classic Chinese poems and tried their hands at writing couplets with the help of professional calligraphers.

Many residents took photos and videos of the process and posted them online to spread good will to all.

Some couplets and fu characters will be sent to poor families and disabled people in local communities to offer them some holiday cheer.
