Laixi locates on the north of Qingdao and in the middle of Jiaodong Peninsula. With a total area of 1,568 square kilometers, it has Chanzhi reservoir (Laixi Lake), the largest reservoir in east Shandong with a storage capacity of 402 million cubic meters, and Jiangshan Wetland, the largest inland wetland of Jiaodong Peninsula with a total area of 25 square kilometers. 

Laixi city is a national top city in terms of technological progress and food industry, a first state-level agricultural industrialization model area, a national tourist city of ecological features and one of the first top ten tourist destinations for leisure (holiday) activities. 

It has established six industrial chains of milk, chicken, pork, vegetables, fruits and peanut processing, as well as four leading industries of food processing, textile and apparel, rubber chemicals and machine manufacturing, and five emerging industries of new energy, new material, bio-medicine, energy conservation & environment protection and information technology, with a focus to build itself into a transportation corridor of Jiaodong Peninsula, the base of advanced manufacturing for Qingdao, an international recreational tourism destination and a national modern agriculture model zone.
