More than 33 hectares of lotus seedpods in Xinzha village, Jining are ushering in the harvest season.

Numerous blooming lotus flowers emit pleasant scents, create enchanting scenery, and, promise a prosperous life for locals.

Locals used to make a living by sowing wheat and fall crops, the output of which was frequently damaged by flooding. 

In April, the village decided to make use of its unused river rapids by introducing innovative technologies and professionals to plant space lotuses.

The wasteland has transformed into a lotus plantation and is celebrating its first harvest in less than half a year.

"The total output is expected to reach 200 tons and bring in more than 500,000 yuan ($71,800) revenue to the village," said Zhao Xingtian, director of the village's committee.

The harvesting season will last through early October, according to Zhao.

"In November, the lotus roots will be ready to enter the market. In addition, the lotus leaves are also expected to create 100,000 yuan in profit each year," Zhao added.

The village plans to expand the lotus plantation by another 33 hectares in the spring to further benefit the area.
