Mulhouse is a city and commune in eastern France, close to the Swiss and German borders. It covers an area of 22.18 square kilometers, with a population of 109,443 in 2017. It's the largest city in the French department of Haut-Rhin and is the second largest in the Alsace region after Strasbourg.

As a scientific research and industrial hub, Mulhouse lays claim to the world's leading technology in terms of printing, dyeing, chemicals processing and machinery manufacturing -- as well as the most advanced communications network in the world.

As early as the mid-19th century, Mulhouse was known as "the industrial capital of Alsace", the "city with a hundred chimneys" and "the French Manchester".

The institutes of science and technology, the European cable companies, the local textile museums and the experts from municipal government jointly established the first textile design library and remote inquiries system, which has become a major symbol of the city. The unique position of the city in the field of scientific and technological progress has formed the "Mulhouse Model".
