Dongying in East China's Shandong province has built a thriving Yellow River estuary hairy crab industry and was home to over 20 leading enterprises and cooperatives by the end of 2023. Spanning about 4,600 hectares, the industry yields 7,000 metric tons of crabs, valued at over one billion yuan ($13.63 million), per year, fueling economic growth and rural vitalization.

The region's unique natural environment, rich in both seawater and freshwater, provides an ideal habitat for crab farming. Advances in ecological farming techniques and quality standards have led to a marked improvement in the crabs' reputation.
Local farmers have benefitted from this booming industry, securing stable jobs and earning substantial incomes. Thanks to a collaborative model which connects the profits of industry associations, leading enterprises, cooperatives, and farmers, many households have seen increased earnings.
The Yellow River estuary's natural resources and cultural heritage have also spurred the development of rural tourism, attracting visitors and providing new income streams for local farmers.
Recently, Yellow River estuary hairy crabs have been exported to Macao, a milestone for the industry. With brand recognition rising, Dongying's hairy crabs have become a symbol of quality, achieving national honors and expanding their export reach.

By implementing advanced water-saving technologies and improving environmental conditions, Dongying ensures the continued growth of its Yellow River estuary hairy crab industry while maintaining a harmonious balance with nature.
