The Dongying section of the Yellow River was recently selected as one of the exemplary cases in the third batch of the "Beautiful Rivers and Lakes" initiative by China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and was the only recipient from Shandong.

In recent years, Dongying has focused on finding harmony between humans and nature. The city has adopted tailored strategies for local conditions, emphasizing full-scale planning and continuous efforts to improve the ecological environment of the Yellow River estuary area.

Key measures include the special rectification campaigns in the Yellow River floodplain, urban rainwater and sewage separation projects, agricultural wastewater treatment, and pollution monitoring. These efforts have significantly improved water quality.

In 2023, the water quality index at the Yellow River's T-junction intersection reached 3.64, reaching a Grade II standard for surface water. Additionally, projects like wetland restoration and invasive species management have enhanced biodiversity. The Yellow River sturgeon reappeared after 30 years, and endangered species like the Yangtze finless porpoise have been spotted near the river's mouth.

Furthermore, Dongying is promoting ecological and cultural industries to improve incomes and livelihoods. The transformation of villages in the Yellow River floodplain, including the relocation of southern district communities, has provided stable housing and new opportunities for residents.
