Situated at the Yellow River estuary, Dongying city has transformed vast amounts of salty soil to lush landscapes and abundant crops.
These ecological improvements are a result of the city's efforts to promote the comprehensive use of salty soil.
Dongying city has prioritized the development of new technologies for agriculture in salty areas. It hosts 48 top-tier university institutes, 108 professional teams, and 50 research platforms. The city has also undertaken 84 key projects from the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, achieved 226 research milestones, and made breakthroughs in 23 essential core technologies.
The city's innovative achievements highlight the surprising productivity of salty soil through advanced technology. For instance, the yield per 0.06 hectare of salt-tolerant soybeans, rice, and wheat reaches 270 kilograms, 498.17 kilograms, and 497.1 kilograms, respectively.
Dongying has also focused on the industrial cultivation of the field harvests, developing specialty brands and promoting them. The brands of rice, soybean, Tan sheep, and prawn farmed in the Yellow River estuary area has been sold well across China.
To date, the city has developed 35 agricultural brands at the provincial level or higher. Notably, the "Yellow River Estuary" brand hairy crab and rice are valued at 3.19 billion yuan and 1.15 billion yuan ($449.46 million and $162.86 million), respectively.
Looking ahead, Dongying will continue to enhance the comprehensive use of soil with high salinity, expand its agricultural output, and contribute to China's food security.
