The Information Office of the Dongying Municipal People's Government hosted a press conference to expound on future plans and relevant details regarding the inclusion of the Yellow River estuary migratory bird habitat on the World Heritage List.
Li Xingjie, deputy secretary of the Party working committee of the Yellow River National Nature Reserve, provided a detailed introduction to the Yellow River estuary migratory bird habitat at the press conference, while also discussing and the process of applying for World Heritage status.
He highlighted that the Yellow River estuary migratory bird habitat spans 879.88 square kilometers and is home to the most well-preserved wetland ecosystem in China's warm temperate zone. It is a critical stopover, wintering ground, and breeding site for migratory birds along the East Asia-Australasia Flyway.
Dongying began the World Heritage application process in 2019. After several stages, including scientific delineation, assessment, and adjustments, the site was successfully inscribed on the World Heritage List during the 46th World Heritage Committee session on July 26, 2024.
Dongying will capitalize on its World Heritage success to promote the concept of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. The city plans to enhance wetland protection, advance wetland culture, and continue the conservation and sustainable use of natural heritage. Efforts will include integrating ecological branding with the development of the Yellow River Estuary National Park.
