Yang Chaoming, a deputy to the 14th NPC and a professor at the Advanced Institute for Confucian Studies at Shandong University proposed establishing classical Chinese learning centers in the hometowns of cultural figures to vitalize traditional culture.
Yang emphasized that Classical Chinese serves as a vessel for the preservation of historical wisdom, humanistic values, and moral philosophy, yet remains underutilized in modern society.
He suggested creating demonstration centers at cultural sites such as Qufu, the birthplace of Confucius; Zoucheng, the hometown of Mencius; and Wuyuan, the birthplace of Zhu Xi, to help preserve Chinese heritage.
These centers would offer classical literature studies, calligraphy, and etiquette training while incorporating interactive activities like poetry contests to promote deeper learning of the classics and boost cultural tourism and local economies.
Yang also proposed selecting villages and scenic spots with a rich cultural heritage and plentiful tourism offering as pilot areas, integrating classical Chinese into local industries. Examples of tasks that could be performed include incorporating classical Chinese elements into tea packaging and handicraft designs, as well as developing cultural products based on stories of famous figures.
He also suggested using new media such as live streaming and short video platforms to promote cultural tourism. Additionally, cultural innovation should be encouraged in the hometowns of cultural figures. Ancient-style songs, using traditional genres such as poetry, should be created to enhance cultural influence.
