The year 2024 was a milestone for Shandong, as it achieved a regional GDP of 9.86 trillion yuan ($1.35 trillion) and a growth rate of 5.7 percent, surpassing the national average by 0.7 percent.

This was announced during the third session of the 14th Shandong Provincial People's Congress, which commenced on the morning of Jan 20, 2025.

During the session, Shandong Governor Zhou Naixiang highlighted in the government work report that in 2024, key indicators in Shandong such as industry, investment, and consumption exceeded the national average, marking new progress in the development of a modern socialist province in the new era.

2025 marks the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–25) and is a crucial year for the comprehensive deepening of reforms. This year, Shandong will further continue pursuing its new development philosophy and vigorously promote high-quality development, Zhou said.

Efforts will be focused on boosting consumption, improving investment efficiency, and promoting the integrated development of scientific and industrial innovation, according to Zhou.

Furthermore, Shandong will strengthen its efforts to become a leader in green, low-carbon, and high-quality development, establish a new, high-level frontier for opening-up, comprehensively advance rural vitalization, and strengthen its modern marine economy, he added.

It also plans to create over 1.1 million new urban jobs and increase residents' incomes along with its economic expansion.
