Dongying, situated in East China's Shandong province, is pursuing innovative transformation in its petrochemical industries.

Tianhon Chemical, a Dongying-based subsidiary of Wanda Petrochemical Group, is driving efforts to build a high-end petrochemical industry cluster with a complete petrochemical industrial chain.

From crude oil extraction and port terminals to petroleum refining, complemented by fine chemical engineering, new materials, rubber production, and tire manufacturing, a closely linked industrial ecosystem has been formed by Tianhon Chemical, integrating both upstream and downstream sectors.

Currently, Wanda Petrochemical Group's various products are exported to over 160 countries and regions worldwide, collaborating with Fortune Global 500 companies such as General Electric, Schlumberger, and Shell.

In addition, Dongying, as the city with the largest refining capacity in the country, is actively and frequently engaged in CCUS (carbon capture, utilization, and storage), which has broad prospects for application in petrochemical industries.

The Qilu-Shengli Oilfield CCUS project, China's first megaton-scale CCUS project, is showcasing the power of green transformation by an energy company.

The project, which will reduce annual carbon emissions by 1 million metric tons, equivalent to planting and nearly 9 million trees and taking nearly 600,000 economy cars off the roads for a year, meanwhile results in an increase of over 200,000 tons of petroleum production.

By the end of 2023, Shengli Oilfield had successfully sequestered 600,000 tons of carbon dioxide and increased oil output by 50,000 tons, opening up a new path for high-quality development of energy enterprises that integrates carbon reduction and carbon utilization.

"Going forward, Dongying will concentrate on developing a comprehensive demonstration base for CCUS to support the green transformation of the oilfield and the upgrading of the petrochemical industry," said Li Jian, section chief of the development and reform commission of Dongying.
