Rizhao is named after an old notion that it is the place where the light of the rising sun can first be seen. It is a new open coastal city, rising like the sun as a tourist and port city.
Located on the central Chinese coast, Rizhao is at the southern end of Shandong Peninsula, neighboring Qingdao to the north and Lianyungang to the south. It faces the Yellow Sea to the east, separated by stretches of sea from Korea and Japan.
Composed of Donggang district, Lanshan district, Ju County and Wulian County, Rizhao covers an area of 5,310 square kilometers.
The 470-Class Sailing World Championships is held in Rizhao in 2006. The city hosts a series of world-class water sports competitions every year. [Photo provided to chinadaily.com.cn]
