The 2023 United Nations (UN) Chinese Language Day in Vienna is scheduled to open on May 2 at the Vienna International Centre, which is home to numerous international organizations.

The event is jointly organized by the Permanent Mission of China to the UN and other international organizations in Vienna and the Shandong Provincial People's Government, and is themed on "Home of Confucius, Hub of the Belt and Road -- A Real Story of the Global Civilization Initiative".

As the hometown of Confucius and an important hub of the Belt and Road Initiative, Shandong's profound culture, beautiful mountains and rivers, and long history will be displayed at the event.

Four exhibitions featuring Chinese characters, hospitality Shandong, Qilu culture, calligraphy and paintings from famous artists will also be displayed at the event.

Moreover, a dazzling array of activities will be held, including the Nishan World Classical Civilization Forum, a symposium in memory of Jakob Rosenfeld (a Jew who served in the army of the Communist Party of China in the 1940s), traditional Chinese medicine lectures and Shandong folk music performances.

The event's purpose is to highlight the high degree of ideological compatibility between Confucianism and the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, and further explore the practical significance of China's fine traditional culture in today's world.

In 2010, the UN Language Day was launched to promote the equal use of the six working languages of the UN, showcase the profound cultural connotations behind each language, and affirm the pluralism of world civilizations and cultures.

The UN Chinese Language Day has become a window for people to learn about Chinese culture. Every year around April 20, a series of activities are launched at UN headquarters to highlight the charm of Chinese language and culture.
