Shandong's retail sales of consumer goods totaled 1.55 trillion yuan ($228.88 billion) in the first half of this year, essentially a recovery from the same period last year.

Shandong has taken full advantage of its huge consumption market, complete industrial base and strong self-circulation ability to promote consumption.

Its latest efforts to boost sales of automobiles, home appliances and other big-ticket items have proved successful by stimulating consumers' appetites, spurring a consumption recovery amid the pandemic and stabilizing economic growth.

Automobiles, home appliances and other big-ticket items account for the large proportion of retail sales of consumer goods and are the focus of expanding domestic demand and stabilizing consumption, according to local officials.

In July, the province offered new coupons worth 200 million yuan to spur the consumer demand for cars. Shandong also released 150,000 coupons worth 500 million yuan in June to spur consumption of passenger vehicles.

More than 40 car brands were promoted at the recently-concluded Juxian county car exhibition, with on-site transactions hitting more than 30 million yuan during the two-day event.

Such promotional sales activities have been held across Shandong to spur consumer demand domestically.

Shandong also performed well in the emerging consumer sector. Total online retail sales in the province reached 287.3 billion yuan in the first half of the year, up 18.7 percent year-on-year, and online retail sales of physical goods reached 252.34 billion yuan, up 26 percent year-on-year.

Shandong has launched a slew of measures and policies to promote the development of e-commerce and cultivate new types of consumption.
