"I had been paying close attention to the changes in my hometown when I was living and working abroad. Shandong's GDP ranks among the top three in China, and its athletes have made great achievements in international and domestic competitions. As a person who has lived and studied in Shandong, I am especially proud of Shandong," said Liu Keyu, a Chinese-Australian researcher who returned to work in China in 2010.

From 2010 to 2015, Liu served as chief engineer of the Petroleum Geology Experiment Center of the Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration and Development.

In January 2016, he started working full time at China University of Petroleum (East China) in Qingdao, holding various positions of seniority in sedimentology and petroleum geology-related research platforms.

After working at China University of Petroleum, Liu led a technical research team of more than 30 people that was composed of young teachers, postdocs and students to develop software containing Chinese independent intellectual property rights, and break the "bottleneck" technology that was developed in foreign countries.

"In recent years, Shandong has stepped up its efforts in supporting scientific research, especially in basic research, which is to be congratulated," Liu said, adding that being supported by the Qingdao National Laboratory of Ocean and Technology and the funding support from Shandong provincial government, his team plans to carry out a three-year research project in deep water oil and gas exploration and development.

Liu also made outstanding contributions in talent introduction and international cooperation. He has organized or participated in more than 10 large international conferences, expanding the influence of China University of Petroleum to the world.
