The Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve in Dongying, Shandong province, presents striking views as Suaeda salsa, a kind of sea grass that is spread across the shoals of the estuary, turn red, adding vibrant color this time of year.

The reserve, located in the Yellow River estuary, covers about 153,000 hectares, with wetlands making up more that 70 percent of the total.

Thanks to more than two decades of wetland restoration and protection efforts, the reserve has become a major wintering and stopover site for migratory birds.
