The giant Shandong Port Group or SPG – one of the biggest port operators in the world, headquartered in Qingdao port in East China's Shandong province – posted a strong performance during the seven-day Chinese National Day holiday on Oct 1-7.
During the period it booked an estimated total throughput of over 30.05 million tons, an increase of 3.5 percent year-on-year and container throughput of over 672,000 TEUs – or twenty-foot equivalent units – up 0.9 percent year-on-year.
It also reported roughly 60,000 carriage loadings onto railway transport, up 0.9 percent year-on-year.
On Oct 1 – the first day of the National Day holiday – the QQCT berths at Qingdao port, operated by SPG, were all running at capacity.Every day during the break, container ships berthing in the Qianwan port area of Qingdao port were reportedly in full operations mode.
In terms of container operations, the hourly, single machine efficiency of the QQCT-berthed ships hit a record high with container throughput up 36.8 percent year-on-year, paving the way for the best National Day holiday handling record achieved since SPG's establishment.
In terms of dry bulk, the company broke four consecutive annual records.
It was reported that SPG's Rizhao port broke individual loading and unloading records seven times during the break, while total cargo throughput increased by 8 percent year-on-year.
