Qingdao Paralympians shine in Tokyo

With the extinguishing of the flame in the caldron, the Tokyo Paralympic Games closed on Sept 5, with Team China winning 207 medals to top the medal tally.

The Chinese athletes, 40 percent of them being first-time Paralympians, won 96 gold, 60 silver, and 51 bronze medals.

A total of seven athletes from Qingdao competed at the Games, wining two silver medals and one bronze medal, as well as two fourth place finishes for China.

In badminton, a new sport added to the Tokyo Paralympics, China's Liu Yutong and Xu Tingting met in the women's singles WH2 gold medal match. Xu, from Qingdao, was defeated by the 17-year-old Liu, losing both sets 21-15 to claim a silver medal.

Xu had played wheelchair basketball for nine years. She came to Qingdao to practice wheelchair badminton after retirement.

In the C1-5 level of the mixed 750-meter team sprint cycling competition, the Chinese team composed of Wu Guoqing, Lai Shanzhang, and Li Zhangyu won the silver medal. The 26-year-old Wu, from Qingdao, also finished in fourth place in the final of the men's C4-5 1,000-meter time trial.

This was Wu's first time participating in the Paralympic Games. He said that he was glad to achieve such good results.

Twenty-year-old Li Yujie, a taekwondo athlete from Qingdao, defeated her opponent from Nepal 12-9 to win the bronze medal in the taekwondo women's K44-58 kg competition. This was also the first time for a Chinese taekwondo athlete to win a medal at Paralympic Games.
