Sangyuan village, a small fishing village in Dongping Lake, has been given a makeover after improvements were made to its rural environment.

The village, located in Shandong's Dongping county, used to have poor living conditions because of a lack of sanitation infrastructure. The village's garbage and sewage were directly discharged into Dongpinghu Lake, resulting in a deterioration of the environment.

In recent years, Dongping county has ramped up efforts to improve the rural environment and restore Dongping Lake.

Local officials said that ecological conservation and environmental protection will benefit future generations while a sound ecological environment is the basic foundation for the sustainable development of humanity and society.

The county has adhered to the concept that "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets", pursuing a holistic approach to conserving its mountains, rivers, forests, farmlands, lakes and grasslands.

A sewage pipe network, special sewage treatment equipment, public toilets and other facilities have been set up in villages to deal with waste in ways that do not harm the environment.

"Tremendous changes have taken place in our village. Bumpy mud roads have been replaced with wide, sealed ones. We now also have constant electricity and internet connection. When I was a child, I never expected that one day I would have such a modern, convenient life," said a villager from Sangyuan village.
