The Chinese Embassy in the United Kingdom partnered with a team of medical experts from East China's Shandong province to deliver an online lecture on epidemic prevention and control to more than 500 Chinese students studying in the UK on March 29.

The lecture provided tips and advice to Chinese students in the UK on staying safe during Britain's coronavirus shutdown.

Specialists in disease control, traditional Chinese and Western medicine, psychology, nursing, and other fields explained the pathogenesis and symptoms of novel coronavirus pneumonia, as well as prevention and treatment techniques, and offered mental health counseling services via video chat. They also answered students' questions and offered various medical supplies, including traditional Chinese medicine.

"From domestic data we can see that the outbreak can be contained. China succeeded, and so can other countries by taking efficient and effective measures," said Jiang Jinjiao, deputy director of the intensive care unit of the Shandong Provincial Hospital, who has treated COVID-19 patients in critical condition.

"The virus is not so scary if you take effective precautions. None of my colleagues fighting on the frontlines were infected. So a correct understanding of the epidemic and proper prevention and control techniques are very important," Jiang said.

"Staying at home is key to preventing the spread of the novel coronavirus," said Zhang Ke, an expert from the Shandong Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Zhang urged Chinese students in the UK to reduce travel, stop using public transport, and stop partying.

Shen Ning, a senior doctor at the Affiliated Hospital of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, also explained TCM's important role in treating patients infected with the novel coronavirus.

"We now have a better understanding of the virus thanks to the lecture, which taught us how to store supplies, home quarantine, and more. It gives us the courage and confidence to fight the epidemic," said one Chinese student.

"We were very uncertain about the outbreak, but now we feel more secure. I hope my parents don't worry too much about the situation in the UK," said Li Xiaoyi, a graduate student at Goldsmiths, University of London.

"With the help of the Chinese Embassy in the UK and a joint working group from Shandong, we have managed to better inform international students about the pandemic."
