Print PrintPenglai, formerly known as Dengzhou, is a county-level city in Yantai, East China's Shandong province.
Lying on the northwest corner of the Shandong Peninsula, the city is a fairyland-like destination brimming with beautiful seas, stunning mountains, long-standing traditions and folk customs, as well as a rich history.
Due to its charming landscapes, Penglai has long been famed as the "heaven on earth" and the "habitat of immortals" since ancient times. The ancient Chinese mythology of Baxianguohai (eight immortals crossing the sea) originated in the city.
The city is also renowned for its mirages out at sea, which are frequent during May and June.
