Yantai plans to develop into a competitive Northeast Asian port, according to a recently released transportation expansion plan for the 13th Five-year National Development Period (2016-2020).

The document outlines plans to construct a major port and several smaller ports in Yantai, Shandong province. To this end, Yantai will make adjustments to each port’s functionality, improve port facilities and build large specialized wharfs.

As the major core port area in Yantai, Xigang port will primarily deal with the shipment of bulk cargoes. Zhifu Bay port will accelerate renovation and relocation efforts to focus on containers, RO-RO (or roll-on, roll-off) vessels, and cruise ships. Mouping port will phase out other functions to focus on passenger transport. Longkou port will construct a 100,000-ton capacity wharf and a liquid natural gas terminal.
