The coastal city of Yantai in East China's Shandong province has more than 8.18 million mu (545,066.67 hectares) of forestland, and its forest coverage rate is 36.28 percent, ranking first in the province for many years, according to statistics released by the city's afforestation committee on March 12, which was China's 44th Tree Planting Day.

In recent years, afforestation and greening efforts have been carried out scientifically in line with local conditions and suitable tree types in Yantai, and the city has also encouraged public participation in various greening projects from donations to tree adoption. According to statistics, the city planted 7,691 mu of forestland last year, which was 148 percent of the province's annual plan.

Thanks to the city's continuous efforts in land afforestation, Yantai has received many honorable titles such as National Model City of Afforestation, and National Forest City.

Local authorities said that Yantai will push forward scientific greening, and focus on small projects in urban areas to improve residents' living conditions. Efforts will also be made to protect and promote the development of forestland and grassland resources.

The city's forest and grassland bureau said that 3,300 mu of trees will be planted this year, and it will keep following the path of green development to promote a harmonious relationship between humans and nature.
