In Munich, Germany, a collection of kites symbolizing good fortune and happiness recently captivated attendees at the local Chinese festival.

Handmade by kite artisans from Weifang, known as the "Kite Capital of the World", the kites showcased unique designs and exquisite craftsmanship, drawing the admiration of students from sister cities.

Weifang, located 17,000 miles from Munich, is famous for its rich kite-making tradition, which involves four key steps: crafting, painting, framing, and flying. Unlike the soft, cartoon-style kites commonly seen in Germany, Weifang's kites range from traditional to modern, each carrying cultural significance.

Munich University of Technology student Ramona shared her newfound understanding of the symbolism behind butterfly kites, which represent freedom, and dragon-headed centipede kites, which symbolize authority. She plans to attend the Weifang International Kite Festival next spring.

Weifang is the world's largest kite producer, manufacturing over 100 million kites annually. The Weifang International Kite Festival has become a major cultural exchange platform, attracting over 350 international participants from 60 countries. The festival's media coverage and global attention highlight the city's cultural legacy and innovative spirit.

Weifang will continue to use kites as a cultural bridge, with plans already in place for future events. Zhao Yifan, an event organizer, confirmed that more kite-flying activities and artist demonstrations will take place next spring, further promoting cultural exchange between Weifang and overseas cities.
