An online exchange themed on tie-dyeing was held recently between Tai'an in Shandong province and Taean county in South Korea, during which artists and students learned about the folk art and discussed its protection and innovation.

Tie-dyeing is an ancient form of textile art. It is a dyeing technique that is recognized as an intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in China and has a long history deeply rooted in folk traditions.

Tie-dyeing primarily utilizes natural dyes extracted from natural materials like flowers, plants, trees, and wood. It is environmentally friendly and healthy. Through processes such as folding, tying, and dyeing, tie-dyeing creates various patterns with distinct shades and layers on cotton fabric.

During the event, Li Na, a teacher from Wanglinpo Primary School in Qiujiadian town, Taishan district, Tai'an, and students showcased their tie-dyeing artworks, including clothes and accessories. Li also explained in detail the tie-dyeing tools and processes to South Korean participants.

The online exchange has provided a great platform for the preservation of tie-dyeing, raising public awareness of this traditional art, Li said.

Li also said he expected that through such activities, more people may become interested in the protection of tie-dyeing and contribute to the preservation and development of culture.
