By 2030, Yantai aims to become a fully-fledged model city for green, low-carbon, and high-quality development, according to a recent plan announced by the People's Government of Shandong province.
Yantai has long been an important manufacturing base and coastal city in Shandong province with a high level of openness. To fully leverage the city's leading role in this regard, the plan outlines five ways for Yantai to become a model city for green, low-carbon, and high-quality development.
Firstly, Yantai will accelerate the construction of a modern industrial system. The city will promote the development of high-end industries such as chemical engineering, automotive, clean energy, aerospace, and pharmaceuticals, while focusing on the cultivation of modern marine industries, digital economy industries, and future industries.
To promote the transition towards more low-carbon production methods, Yantai will reduce industrial solid waste at the source and promote resource utilization, supporting the creation of "zero-waste industrial parks" and "zero-waste enterprises". The establishment of "zero-carbon industrial parks" involving carbon capture, storage, and resource utilization is also a top priority.
Large-scale nuclear power, wind power, and LNG supply and storage bases are currently under rapid construction. By 2027, Yantai's clean energy installed capacity is expected to reach around 20 million kilowatts, accounting for over 65 percent of the total installed capacity.
Yantai is striving to become the most beautiful ecological city in North China by actively optimizing air quality, treating rivers and lakes, and enhancing protection and restoration of marine areas, islands, and coastlines.
Furthermore, Yantai will boost green and low-carbon development through accelerated reform and opening up. It plans to deepen cooperation with traditional markets such as Japan, South Korea, Europe, and the United States, as well as with emerging markets like ASEAN and Africa. Yantai aims to fully integrate into the Qingdao metropolitan area and Jiaodong economic circle, while deepening exchanges with the Yangtze River Delta and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
