National nuclear research center opens in Yantai

A national-level research and development center for nuclear power was inaugurated in Yantai, Shandong province on Nov 29, with the aim of solving technical challenges in the country's domestic nuclear industry.
The center was built jointly by state-owned nuclear power companies, China General Nuclear Power Corporation, China National Nuclear Corporation and State Power Investment Corporation,and the privately-owned Yantai Taihai Group.The first of its kind in China, the center will employ influential representatives from enterprises and education institutions, experts and scholars in the field of nuclear power.
Shu Guogang, the center's director, said that the first 10 institutes established there would focus on the utilization of nuclear power, radiation protection, energy storage, nuclear waste treatment, thermal management, and fast reactors.
"Our research will address the technical problems of mass production in China's third-generation domestic nuclear power projects, such as the Hualong One reactors," Shu added.
