Yantai's lasting appeal: Strength behind its success
Updated : 2026-04-20
As northern China's first prefecture-level city with a GDP exceeding one trillion yuan ($146.6 billion), Yantai didn't become a sensation overnight. Its steady rise is built on industrial strength, marine advantages, cultural vitality and rural development.
Yantai is a heavy industry powerhouse. Its space port has sent 155 satellites into orbit through 25 sea launches. The city built the world's first offshore wind installation vessel with a 3,000-metric ton lifting capacity. Its materials help make China's C919 jet, and its fibers were woven into the flag on the far side of the moon. Yantai's offshore drilling equipment operates beyond 9,000 meters.
Beyond manufacturing, Yantai has built a formidable ocean economy. Its port ranks among the top 10 globally, leading in bauxite throughput, China-Africa trade, and car shipments. The marine economy exceeds 300 billion yuan, supporting offshore wind, fish farms, and sea launches. Large-scale offshore fish farms and salmon farming are redefining aquaculture.
Yantai is also becoming younger and more vibrant. From sold-out concerts to football matches drawing tens of thousands of fans, the city is buzzing. Filmmakers call it a natural studio, with dozens of productions shooting here for its authentic scenery.
Even rural Yantai is thriving. Villages once known only for farming now host harvest festivals and basketball tournaments. One cherry-growing town has built a 1.5-billion-yuan industry, while folk song competitions have attracted nearly 50,000 participants.
In short, Yantai's enduring appeal comes from steady growth across manufacturing, marine innovation, culture, and rural revival. That is why people keep coming back.
