Tai'an pet food exports surge with customs support

Pet food exports from Tai'an in East China's Shandong province reached 135 million yuan ($20.02 million) in the first half of this year, up 24.6 percent year-on-year. Behind the growth is a targeted support strategy from Tai'an Customs.

Two pet food hubs have grown in Fanzhen town and Dongping county in Tai'an. In the Fanzhen town cluster, products are mainly destined for the European Union (EU), the United States, and Japan, with customs support focusing on overseas registration and HACCP certification. Last December, four companies were recommended for EU market entry, with three approved.

In Dongping, the industry hub focuses on Southeast Asian markets, where customs guidance on additive limits helps companies optimize formulas. Relying on Dongping Lake, the food company Green Food in Tai'an sources fresh lake-produced ingredients locally, reducing overall logistics costs by 15 percent. In 2025, the company sold over 20,000 metric tons of pet food, with 40 percent exported overseas.

Customs officers also invited approved enterprises to share successful practices with those still working toward EU approval. Through regular policy sessions, a dedicated service platform, and compliance training, customs helps companies navigate complex regulations. Three companies have now entered the EU market, with six more on the national recommendation list.

As a deputy customs official stated, a dedicated fast-track clearance channel will ensure zero-delay clearance for pet food exports, continuing to support Tai'an's growing role in the global pet food market.
