The fourth "Yihe night" short play showcase concluded in Linyi, Shandong province, on Aug 1, featuring 29 locally produced plays that highlighted the creativity of grassroots performers and stories drawn from everyday life.
Launched four years ago, the event has grown into a major cultural platform combining city-level showcases with rural touring performances.
The short plays are created and performed by residents, often using local dialects and focusing on the everyday people and stories around them. Touching on themes ranging from revolutionary history and rural development to social issues, the productions bring both traditional values and contemporary concerns to the stage. Stories about the Yimeng revolutionary base area, online scams targeting older people, and the challenges faced by young entrepreneurs have all been adapted into performances that resonate with local audiences.
Linyi is the first city in Shandong to launch a program encouraging the creation of 100 grassroots short plays. It has set up 15 creation and performance studios at the municipal and county levels. To date, the "Yihe night" short play showcase has featured more than 300 works and presented over 1,300 performances.
