Students at Linyi Vocational University of Science and Technology are gaining employer recognition before graduation, as companies seek graduates with strong practical skills.
"Please recommend more students from the flexible packaging program," a partner company recently told Zhu Yuquan, head of the college's packaging engineering technology program. Zhu said several graduates had already stood out in company skill contests, with one named a "team star".
The results come from a training model jointly developed by government, industry, enterprises and the college.
In packaging engineering technology, experts, teachers and companies such as Shandong Bihai Packaging Materials jointly design courses and practical training around enterprise needs. In mechatronics, workplace tasks such as home electrical circuit renovation help students learn theory through hands-on problem-solving.
The college is also using applied research to address industry challenges. Drawing on Linyi's wood-based panel industry, a faculty-student team developed an artificial intelligence panel defect detection system that can identify 18 common defects with 95.3 percent accuracy, inspect 1,200 panels per hour and help partner companies cut costs.
"The college follows the principle of setting programs based on regional needs and courses based on enterprise demand," said Sun Xin, deputy director of the college's academic affairs office.
Beyond job skills, the college supports long-term growth through cross-disciplinary courses, rural vitalization training, modern industry colleges and innovation platforms.
