Golden 'tidal trees' of Dongming: Nature's masterpiece on the Yellow River

Following the recent completion of the Yellow River's annual water and sediment regulation, water levels showed a slow recession across the floodplain. As the sandbars emerged from the retreating current, an extraordinary natural canvas appeared: the breathtaking "tidal trees" along the riverbank in Dongming county, Heze, Shandong province.

These are not living trees in the conventional sense. They are unique sedimentary landforms born of the river's patient craftsmanship. When the floodwaters subside, the runoff follows the subtle contours of the mudflats, cutting channels through the soft, golden silt. Over time, these currents erode grooves of varying depths — the main channel forming a thick trunk, the smaller branches fanning out like limbs and twigs.

Viewed from above, the pattern mirrors a luxuriant, ancient tree, giving rise to the name "tidal tree".

Yet this landscape is a limited-edition spectacle. Once the river rises again and the sandbars vanish beneath the current, the tidal trees dissolve back into the water, leaving no trace until the next cycle.
