Situated in the south of Shandong province, Jining -- a city well-known as "the hometown of Confucius and Mencius and the metropolis along the Grand Canal" -- is located in the fringe zone of four provinces: Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan and Anhui, and contains two districts, two county-level cities, and seven counties.

It covers an area of 11,000 square kilometers with a special geographic situation -- the east part is situated in a mountainous area while the mid-west area is located in an area combining plains, billabongs and a freshwater lake of 1,260 square kilometers, the largest in North China.

Jining, seen as the cradle of Chinese civilization which produced Confucius, Mencius, and other ancient sages, has fused the cultural features of northern and southern China to form its own characteristics since the Grand Channel opened.

It has a variety of unique cultural relic sites three of which are under state-level protection: the Confucius Family Mansion, the local Temple and the Cemetery. The mansion claims to be "the best mansion of China" and is a Historical and Cultural Heritage approved by UNESCO; the old-line magnitude temple is deemed to be of the highest rank; and the cemetery was the largest artificial garden in ancient China. These relics attract thousands of worshippers and tourists from home and abroad every year.

Jining's tourism has taken shape: there are cultural heritages in the east, Liang Mountain scenic spots in the west, beautiful wetlands in the south and Buddhist temples in the north.
